Arup City Resilience Index

Brief

Developed by Arup's International Development team with support from The Rockefeller Foundation, The City Resilience Framework is a unique framework based on extensive research in cities. It was further developed to create the City Resilience Index, which accurately measured city-scale resilience. This provides a lens to understand the complexity of cities and the drivers that contribute to their resilience. Looking at these drivers can help cities to assess the extent of their resilience, to identify critical areas of weakness, and to identify actions and programs to improve the city’s resilience. I was tasked with designing the web app to aggregate a city’s resilience through a number of questions spanning various topics regarding the city.

Process

I reviewed early wireframes previously created and went back to the drawing board to create pencil sketch wireframes. I presented these to the client in a review/discovery session. In this session we fleshed out user journeys, personas and made amendments to the sketch wireframes. I then used Balsamiq to redo the wireframes and user journeys, I also created a group of proto personas. With a few rapid rounds of feedback from the client, some iterations where made and I moved into Photoshop to begin creating the UI design. I used Bootstrap's grid to inform the structure of the interface. After a number of review sessions, the designs were signed off and the design files were handed over to the development team. I also provided a style guide for the developers with CSS styling for the typography, colour and button styles.
